Impacting Business Leaders is as easy as 1,2,3!

Youth in Southeast Asia (2)

We have an exciting announcement to make at YouthHOPE for the youth of Myanmar! God has opened doors for three international business as mission trainers from Chiang Mai, Thailand to train our summer internship participants and the Myanmar business community on business as mission skills.  Originally our summer interns were going to travel to a conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand before coming to Myanmar.  However, due to lack of interest from college students there, the company was forced to cancel the training. Our interns still needed training before this summer so he asked the trainers if they’d come to Myanmar instead. Their calendars were free and they accepted! It gets better!  In wanting to make their time in Myanmar worthwhile, Ryan talked with a couple of organizations in his network and the response was overwhelming.  He approached the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce about doing a two hour session with some of their …

What If you only had $1 a day?

one-dollar-bill-large

Did you ever see an episode of “30 Days” that aired from 2005 to 2008 on FX? If not you missed out on Morgan Spurlock (better known for the documentary “Super Size Me”) immerse himself in something for 30 days. Episodes ranged from living on minimum wage for 30 days to spending 30 days in prison. He actually only spent 25 days because most prisoners in Virginia serve only 85% of their sentence. Like Morgan Spurlock’s “30 Days” I’ll be living off $1 a day for food for the full 29 days of February. I will be joining 2.7 billion people in the world today who live on $2.50 or less a day. Last month I was traveling a lot raising support for Mary and my ministry in Myanmar.  In the midst of my travels I visited one of my best friends, Matt Hickman, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Matt has a huge heart for the poor and is planning to start an organization in the next year and a half called “truth be told” that will …

Transformational youth ministry-Malawi & Zambia Internship 2012

Youth training for Foundations for Farming in the village of Eg'chickeni.

At YouthHOPE, we have the privilege of working with awesome global youth workers throughout the world who have a heart to see the lives of youth transformed by God.  These people are in the trenches, working daily to bring the truth of Christ to the youth they interact with.  Some of the global youth workers that I am blessed to work with are the same wonderful people who were hosts to my intern team this past summer, Rutherford and Tsahai Banda in Malawi and Lloyd Ng’ambi in Zambia.  I was privileged with the opportunity to spend the summer working alongside these amazing servants in their ministries and I am excited about the opportunities in front of our intern team for 2012! Currently, it is estimated that 21% of the population in Zambia is made up of youth between the ages of 15-24.  These youth are facing many difficulties, including unemployment, lack of education, and HIV/AIDS.  Lloyd, Director of Youth, Synod of …

Jobs for teens not always a good thing

One of the projects that YouthHOPE is developing is about creating jobs for youth.  Unemployment for youth is at an all-time high and it is impacting their lives and communities in a very negative way.  Many youth are looked to in order to help provide for their families and for the millions of AIDS orphans, even to be the head of the household.  We feel like one very tangible way that we can share the love of Christ with them is through the creation of jobs.  You can read more about this type of ministry in our Southeast Asia project. There is a flip-side to this.  And it is even uglier.  One of the things that we like to talk about is the potential that youth have.  We are not the only ones that believe that.  However, there are too many that want to take advantage of that potential rather than empower.  Child labor was dealt with in the United States in 1924 when the Child Labor Amendment was passed to limit, …

Potential to Bless or Burden a Nation

With my wife literally half way around the world, I often times find myself thinking about where she is and what she is up to... In an attempt to become a little better informed about her current whereabouts, I stumbled upon this article about youth employment in Cambodia. It’s a great article and, in case business or statistics bore you,  I’ve highlighted a few points I considered worthwhile: …

Are Youth Changing the World?

February 11, 2011 by Kyle Leave a Comment
egyptprotest

Most of us watch the news of what’s happened in North Africa over the last few weeks and never take the time to ask how all this got started.  Sure we know people are upset and supposedly there are some evil dictators involved, but what about the fire-starters: who, or what, kicked off these revolutions? Many attribute the Egyptian protests to people uniting through social networking to rally together 91% of the country’s 9.4% unemployed: the under-30s.  Some might suggest it was the 26 year-old vegetable vendor who set himself ablaze, literally and figuratively igniting the Tunisian protests.  His beef was with the government: he was denied the right to sell vegetables in a country where the youth unemployment rate is estimated at 30 percent.  Having spent time ministering in England, I was reminded of last November when youth in the UK were busy protesting high costs of education.  Realizing their college degrees would …
