What would your teenager do for an iPad?

May 11, 2012 by Aaron Leave a Comment
ipad

Last month, I finally broke down and bought an iPad (refurbished iPad 2 for $349!!) as prices dropped with the release of the new model. I am really anal retentive about my electronics and have to make sure I need them and that they are going to serve the purpose that I expect from them. I know I probably should chill out, but that’s what happens when you have high expectations and not that much money. As I was doing research about the iPad and whether or not I could travel solo with it, I ran across some crazy news. 1. A 17 year old named Wang sold his kidney to buy the new iPad and the iPhone 4s that came out earlier this year. Five people were arrested including the doctor and “organ broker”. The youth received $3500 for the kidney, which was sold for $35,000. …

10 Marks of a Successful Youth Ministry

April 27, 2012 by Justin Leave a Comment
IMG_0771

I recently spent the weekend at Impact Student Ministries of First Baptist Church of Vandalia, OH.  I had the honor of being their guest speaker for a DiscipleNOW weekend they call “Morphis.”  Dale and Christa Puckett have led the youth there for 3 years and what I saw in my time with them was nothing short of fascinating. Psalm 115:1  “Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to Your Name be the glory, for Your mercy (love) and Your truth (faithfulness).”  Success in youth ministry is not quantified by numbers, but rather by fruit.  A youth ministry will not bear fruit unless it is Jesus centered.  This is not an exhaustive list.  However, here are 10 marks of a successful youth ministry, as evidenced by what I saw at FBCV: A team mindset – the small group leaders at Impact serve joyfully.  They know they are part of the team.  Dale & Christa do not micromanage them, they trust that they will minister well to …

Is body image just a Western Issue?

March 28, 2011 by Kristy Leave a Comment
body_image

A new study has found body image is the top concern for youth in W. Australia, even over important issues like family conflict or school problems. As I read through this news article, it seems to me to be more Western or or at least an issue that is more prevalent among youth in developed countries. I don't have the statistics to back this up (yet), and the little amount of looking around for them has turned up nil so far. Kind of seems like an obvious result though. When you are striving to survive, I don't think there is much time to deal with some of the more introspective issues like body image. Let me give you an example (please do not misunderstand me, I am in no way trying to minimize the issue of body image that teens face in a very real way in many countries). Let's take the case of Chotsani, a 16 year old female young person in Malawi. She is the default head of her household now since both of her parents have died …

Bully Beatdown

March 26, 2011 by Adam Leave a Comment

I'm often amazed at how quickly and what types of things go viral these days. Several of my friends posted a video of a bully getting his on Facebook last week. As usual, when I saw multiple people I respect posting links to the same thing, I took the bate and checked it out. Less because I'm interested in bullying (though I am, as one who is dedicated to working with youth), and more because I am fascinated by culture - especially the recent cultural phenomenon of viral videos. I confess I watch reality TV and I like it. I like it for the same reasons I'm intrigued by viral videos. It's like people-watching without the work of going out and finding the people. I watch not because I'm particularly interested in fashion design or survival skills, but because I'm interested in the sociological experiment. I evaluate what it says about our culture, what we value, how we relate to one another, etc. Maybe it is because I'm not in …

I hate(d) Youth Ministry

February 5, 2011 by Kyle 5 Comments

I grew up in a small church.  It was a place where young people were shifted to some far corridor to participate in “Wee Worship” or “Junior Church” while the adults sat through “Big Church.”  I never missed Sunday School and had more than one decidedly un-cool youth minister.  I can attribute much of my early spiritual formation to one of those “t-shirt-tucked-into-jeans-with-no-belt” mentors.  His investment in me led to my pursuit of ministry as a vocation. Well, him and some Thursday night message at a summer youth conference. After enrolling myself in college to prepare for ministry, I was blessed to get the opportunity to study the Word in an in-depth kind of way. I was surprised to find no mention of “youth ministers” anywhere in the Scriptures. In fact, I soon discovered that there seemed to be only one group set apart to minister to young people: their parents. Think Deuteronomy 6: Hear, O Israel: The …
