Transformational youth ministry-Malawi & Zambia Internship 2012

January 20, 2012 by Katie Leave a Comment
Youth training for Foundations for Farming in the village of Eg'chickeni.

At YouthHOPE, we have the privilege of working with awesome global youth workers throughout the world who have a heart to see the lives of youth transformed by God.  These people are in the trenches, working daily to bring the truth of Christ to the youth they interact with.  Some of the global youth workers that I am blessed to work with are the same wonderful people who were hosts to my intern team this past summer, Rutherford and Tsahai Banda in Malawi and Lloyd Ng’ambi in Zambia.  I was privileged with the opportunity to spend the summer working alongside these amazing servants in their ministries and I am excited about the opportunities in front of our intern team for 2012! Currently, it is estimated that 21% of the population in Zambia is made up of youth between the ages of 15-24.  These youth are facing many difficulties, including unemployment, lack of education, and HIV/AIDS.  Lloyd, Director of Youth, Synod of …

Asia has some of the fastest growing economies with some of the largest populations of poverty in the world.  The country you will travel to has been under a Military dictatorship for the past 20 years.  This last year was the beginning of transition for the country.  The country was once known as one of the worst human rights violators in the world, but after a November 2010 democratic election there have been fast changes.  Businesses have now opened up and this country has been accepted into the Asian business community.  Recently the U.S. sent diplomats to discuss leniency on years of …

Journey of Encouragement

December 12, 2011 by Katie Leave a Comment
Recruiting at Wheaton College

As I think of the 4 weeks of recruiting across 10 states, I’m able to look back over our time and be amazed by the provision of God and the incredible ways he encouraged us throughout the time. I want to thank those who were praying for us, it was evident that God was answering and blessing us in ways I didn’t even realize I needed. Throughout the 4 weeks we had the opportunity to speak with lots of college students who are on fire for God and have a desire to follow Him to the ends of the world, or next door, wherever He calls.  We got to listen as students shared their hearts, their passions, their dreams that God has planted in them.  (Let me tell you, I am blessed to do that as part of my “job”). One of the encounters that was particularly encouraging to me was at the last school we went to for recruiting, Berry College in Rome, Georgia.  By this time in the journey, Britney and I were definitely feeling some of …

Is God inefficient?

September 22, 2011 by Adam 6 Comments
efficiency-perfection

No answers or advice for youth workers in this post, just an invitation to do a little pondering and potentially enter into a conversation. Honestly, it is a conversation I would rather not have. I am obsessed with efficiency and productivity. Seriously, ask my wife. We "have discussions" about aesthetics often. In my world the photos, paint, and wall hangings she spends money on or time and energy creating add little value to our home because they have no practical value. We "have discussions" about her getting the radio right before we start driving because it would be way more efficient to do that at the first red light. I have a problem. Also, as the point person for YouthHOPE’s internships, I fear it could reflect poorly on the program we have been trying to build. (Because it could make them appear to be all about the participant and their experience, which is always a secondary issue in our planning.) Two quotes from …

Hear from some of YouthHOPE's 2011 Interns as they share their thoughts on an amazing summer spent in different parts of the world. Our teams did an excellent job of serving others and recognizing the transformative power of the gospel in the lives of youth overseas. …

Jesus Wins!

This might be our last blog update from Cambodia. Our team has grown exceedingly close over the past 2 months. I can hardly believe that we will soon be leaving the country that we have mutually grown to know and love.  God has definitely brought this group together for "such a time as this."  We all have different talents that can be used to bring glory to the one true King.  I am incredibly humbled to see how divine God's plan is and how he has knit us in a group, who is far better together as a team than we are as individuals.  Oh Praise Him. We have been working in separate ministries much of the summer; Kristen, Sue and Adam have been working in the villages most days of the week teaching English and Christian values. Hannah, Kristy, and Brittany have been teaching art, English and bible lessons at the safe house.  Sue just had her final class for the North Korean doctors on Monday and for the final week we will be …

God’s Plans Are Far Better Than Ours…

July 11, 2011 by Kristy Leave a Comment

To our faithful supporters who are faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace and Peace to you from God our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ. We cannot think of a better way to address you than the way that Paul addresses the faithful church in Ephesus almost 2000 years ago.  Our team is so thankful for your partnership in sharing the gospel over the past 2 months.  We are hoping to finish the race strong together, as Christ unites our hearts through prayer.  God is revealing the fruit of your prayers in amazing ways.  Even in our struggles, God has shown us the purpose in His timing.  We would like to share a story with you of God's provision this last week. Last Tuesday, we took Britney Sue to the doctor because she had some pretty nasty bug bites on her legs.  Immediately after arriving at a clinic, they ushered her back into the surgical room followed by three doctors, then three more... and then 3 more closely behind....  Don't …

Woah… We’re Halfway There…

In exactly 3 weeks we begin our journey to the US. It can't be true that we've been away from home for over a month now??! This week we closed a chapter in our Cambodian adventure. After 3 weeks of English classes, kids clubs, dance and Christian values classes, we said goodbye to the AMAZING kids at the Puok School out in one of the villages. It truly was a life-changing experience to work with kids who are so hungry to learn new words and hear more Bible stories. We got some beautiful artwork from some of our favorite kids as goodbye presents. It was hard to explain to them why we had to leave but we told them it was time for us to go help some different students and that we will be thinking of them always. On our last day at "sala bpoa keyoo" (the blue school), we had a little graduation ceremony from dance class, along with lots of pictures and hugs with the leadership team out there (Roselette, Nary, and Rayuk). We are so …

This Doesn’t Happen in America!

swahili lesson in market

Jambo! Habari gani? In case you don’t speak Kiswahili that means, “Hello! What’s new?” Over the past couple of weeks we have been spending our mornings learning Kiswhalili from our new friend Ann. We have learned some useful phrases and have been practicing throughout town, in church, at schools and during youth and children’s fellowships. We received a challenge to have a full day of Kiswahili by the end of our trip…we’ll be using a lot of body language that day. During the past couple of days, we have had the opportunity to embrace the Kenyan (primarily Maasai) culture through our visits to various primary and secondary schools. Yesterday, we were able to take part in the Maasai Girl’s Secondary School church service as we learned dances and talked over a cup of chai. We have also had the pleasure of making friends with a number of the local youth workers.  We have been able to invite them over for games and hot …

Kenya hits the ground running!

June 17, 2011 by Kristy Leave a Comment
airport[1]

Upon our arrival at pre-field orientation, we were surprised with an adventurous cultural experience to prepare us for our time in Kenya. During orientation we became unified as a team through the cultural-entry adventure, seminars, team-building activities, sharing our personal testimonies, and spending time socializing together. We left orientation feeling prepared as possible to serve together in Kenya. Our travels to Kenya entailed an overnight flight from Miami to London.  We endured a 9-hour layover, during which we ate, slept and began to write lesson plans. Feeling sleep deprived, our next overnight flight from London to Nairobi departed at 9pm. After obtaining several hours of sleep on the plane, we arrived in Nairobi, Kenya! Thank the Lord, none of our bags were lost in the process! We were greeted with a humorous introduction to our host missionary, Elijah Ombati, and one of the gentlemen with witch we will be …

What’s Going on in Malawi?

June 12, 2011 by Kristy Leave a Comment
Bible Study

Muli Bwanji? (How are you?), Greetings from Team Malawi! We have arrived in Malawi just 2 days ago after a long couple days of traveling. The journey was met with little to no problems. It was a good experience as a team to venture into London for a few hours during our 9 hour layover at Heathrow. It was wonderful to be reunited with the Banda's as they welcomed us warmlyinto their home. It has taken us a while to recoup our energy and sleep and now we are doing well.  Laney, Amy, and Katie went into town yesterday with the national missionaries Rutherford and Tsahai Banda to get traditional clothing called "Zitenge" to wear in the village's. They visited the town market for vegetables and fruit which was a immersive experience.." Never experienced anything like that before. It was intimidating and a bit overwhelming but stretched me in a positive way."  - Laney Binkley The next two days we are preparing lessons for the youth …

We're finally on the last leg of our journey to our home for the summer. We've spent 23 hours in 4 different airplanes, 8 hours in airports, 3 overnights - 1 in Bangkok and 2 in Phnom Penh, and now we're in the middle of our 6 hour bus ride to our YWAM base. Needless to say, we've gotten to know each other quite well already! Lots of laughs, lots of yawns, & not much sleep. Here are the highlights of our journey across the globe: Being served breakfast, lunch and dinner on the plane to Tokyo A 2 a.m. tour of Bangkok with pit stops for some authentic street food and a drive through the flower market Sweating through multiple pairs of clothes Paying in U.S. Dollars and getting change in Khmer Riel Meeting and LOVING our host, Jenni Drive-bys of the King's Palace No shoes, cushion seats, AMAZING dinner Lots of tuk-tuk rides all around the city Bartering in the market A trip to the TUOL SLENG Genocide Museum …

Our Summer Interns are AMAZING!

June 10, 2011 by Aaron Leave a Comment
SE Asis Intern Team

I had the chance to spend a day with our intern teams at Pre-Field Orientation which took place at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida.  After having followed the process of planning and recruiting for the four YouthHOPE internships, it was great to finally meet the people that will be sent out as global youth ministry ambassadors.  I must tell you that I was very impressed with the quality of each and every one of the interns.  One of the reasons that I spent the day with them was to provide some training in the area of global youth ministry, to share the vision of YouthHOPE and also to teach on the subjects of worldview and culture.  They interacted well and seemed very eager to learn.  To me a "learner spirit" is one of the of important characteristics that we look for in our interns.  While they go to serve the people in the country of their internship, they also go to learn from them.  It is only with …

Thoughts about YouthHOPE’s 2011 Interns

April 2, 2011 by Aaron 1 Comment
intern

I was in church worshiping on Sunday and we sang the song With Everything.  The lyrics of the song really started to make me think.  The opening verse says: Open our hearts, To see the things That make Your heart cry, To be the church That You would desire. Light to be seen. That made me think about the 14 YouthHOPE interns preparing right now to go to the five countries where they will come alongside youth in some pretty challenging situations. Some of them will work with Haitian youth, many of whom are still living with post traumatic stress disorder from the earthquake that devastated their nation. Some will be showing the love of Christ to young people in SE Asia who were taken advantage of and abused. It is my prayer that as the interns go into these situations, that God would allow their hearts to hurt as His does and that that would spur them on to be the church that we are called to be. …
