“My first born daughter of Uganda”

May 9, 2012 by B Sue Leave a Comment
Deborah Nakibuuka, NOW 2011 & THEN 2004

Deborah's life is a testimony to God's good work and a glimpse at the way He transforms lives. Deborah was young when Lena Pira sponsored her through African Renewal Ministries (ARM).  Lina has a heart to train up a new generation of Christian leaders and she saw great potential in young Deborah.  The two started to exchange letters back and forth.  In 2006 Lina went to Uganda to work with ARM ministries and had the privilege of finally meeting Deborah face to face.  "She was very shy, reserved, and not quite sure of herself or how to interact with me," recalls Lina. In 2007 Lina returned to Uganda to work near Deborah's school.  They enjoyed each others company and  began to form a unique bond.  Deborah would visit her during the day and volunteer her time to work alongside Lina in her free time.  Lina saw the potential in Deborah as God's daughter. "Over the years I have seen her transform from a shy 8 year old to a …

Overwhelmed with Excitement! These are the final few days before the first classes at Opportunities NOW.  It’s been a busy week doing a teacher orientation, tweaking the curriculum, and having lots of final meetings.  It’s amazing how everything has come together.  The last two years of ideas, meetings, and research are all coming together on Monday when students enter our facility to start their journey toward starting their own business. …

Impacting Business Leaders is as easy as 1,2,3!

Youth in Southeast Asia (2)

We have an exciting announcement to make at YouthHOPE for the youth of Myanmar! God has opened doors for three international business as mission trainers from Chiang Mai, Thailand to train our summer internship participants and the Myanmar business community on business as mission skills.  Originally our summer interns were going to travel to a conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand before coming to Myanmar.  However, due to lack of interest from college students there, the company was forced to cancel the training. Our interns still needed training before this summer so he asked the trainers if they’d come to Myanmar instead. Their calendars were free and they accepted! It gets better!  In wanting to make their time in Myanmar worthwhile, Ryan talked with a couple of organizations in his network and the response was overwhelming.  He approached the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce about doing a two hour session with some of their …

Young and Wild

Joven-y-Alocada3-3-review

I was chatting with a friend in Chile the other day and he asked me if I had heard about the new Chilean movie that had just won the World Cinema Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival. It is called Joven y Alocada - Young and Wild (WARNING: the trailer for the movie is VERY graphic, please do not watch it if you think that you would be offended. The movie itself is rated NC-17 and is extremely sexually graphic, which is not uncommon for Chilean TV and film.). It is about the life of a young girl who grew up in an very conservative “evangelical” (a term used in Chile to describe the non-catholic or protestant Christians, which usually have a Pentecostal style) home. Her uncle was the preacher and her parents were very involved in the church. The thing is that their kids were just not vibing with this ultra conservative lifestyle. It was a very controlling and legalistic environment. The oldest daughter was kicked …

24/7 Global Youth Ministry

March 19, 2012 by Justin Leave a Comment
Matt and Jan King

We've all heard that youth ministry requires a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week commitment, but imagine this: You plan a youth event in your home.  You invite teens, make food, pick out games/activities and everything is set.  The youth arrive and have an amazing time.  Ministry happens, fun happens and relationships are built.  4 hours later, the party ends and none of the high school boys leave.  They don't leave because they live with you.  All. The. Time. In 1997, Matt and Jan King left their home in the US to go and serve at the Rift Valley Academy in Kenya, Africa. The current student body of nearly 500 includes more than 20 different nationalities. The families these students represent serve with 80 mission organizations in over 20 African countries. The King family committed to a 4 year term, and are still serving there 14 years later.  In addition to teaching, and raising 4 kids of their own, they are dorm parents to 22 …

Contextualizing NASCAR

March 9, 2012 by Kyle 2 Comments
driving-fast

I was listening to National Public Radio the other day and I heard that a psychologist at West Virginia University has connected some 650 automobile accidents to people watching NASCAR.  He was saying that folks were actually acting out NASCAR-style driving when behind the wheel of their family vehicle.   You can listen to it here (4min 28sec). Last night I taught a course at a local church on contextualization (the process of making sense of information from the situation or location in which it is found).  We covered a wide variety of topics including culture, worldviews, epistemology, and ethnocentrism.  Once we were able to navigate our way through some of the heavier pieces we turned our sights towards practical application.  I could tell that the people in the class were trying desperately to wrap their minds around how the issue actually applied to missions work. Most, if not everyone, involved in global ministry …

What If you only had $1 a day?

February 16, 2012 by Ryan Leave a Comment
one-dollar-bill-large

Did you ever see an episode of “30 Days” that aired from 2005 to 2008 on FX? If not you missed out on Morgan Spurlock (better known for the documentary “Super Size Me”) immerse himself in something for 30 days. Episodes ranged from living on minimum wage for 30 days to spending 30 days in prison. He actually only spent 25 days because most prisoners in Virginia serve only 85% of their sentence. Like Morgan Spurlock’s “30 Days” I’ll be living off $1 a day for food for the full 29 days of February. I will be joining 2.7 billion people in the world today who live on $2.50 or less a day. Last month I was traveling a lot raising support for Mary and my ministry in Myanmar.  In the midst of my travels I visited one of my best friends, Matt Hickman, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Matt has a huge heart for the poor and is planning to start an organization in the next year and a half called “truth be told” that will …

Less Equals More

February 13, 2012 by Adam 1 Comment
Less-equals-more

< = > Less equals more. Having the opportunity to minister cross-culturally has made me more aware of my own cultural. I have grown to understand my worldview better because I actively work to learn others in order to communicate Biblical ideas in culturally relevant ways. Materialism is obviously a problem within the church here in the United States. Most are aware of this. I do feel I am more aware of the negative consequences because of the exposure to those living joyfully with much less in cultures where materialism is not a huge issue. I am surprised that our culture in the US is starting to perceive the negative effects. (Spoiler alert: while our culture might be beginning to see the problem, it still desperately needs help in identifying a solution.) Take this TED video as an example. The speaker states that we have three times more space than we did 50 years ago, but that across the board we are less happy. I …

Urban Action- Shaking too much dust?

skating

At YouthHOPE one of our 4 core values focuses on relationships.  We work in community and through communities to build partnerships of shared learning, trust and responsibility.  Our partners at Urban Action have a unique opportunity to share Christ by building relationships through skate ministry in Chile.  Here is a recent blog post about what God has been teaching them through their relationships with the skate boarding community: Click here to read more blogs by Urban Action. "If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town." - Matthew 10:14 Have you ever heard someone quote this passage in a conversation about sharing faith in Jesus? So, if I give somebody a tract, or tell them the 4 Spiritual laws, or explain the Roman Roads, or just tell them I go to church and they don’t immediately decide to follow Christ - I’m done, right? I’m pretty sure …

Asia has some of the fastest growing economies with some of the largest populations of poverty in the world.  The country you will travel to has been under a Military dictatorship for the past 20 years.  This last year was the beginning of transition for the country.  The country was once known as one of the worst human rights violators in the world, but after a November 2010 democratic election there have been fast changes.  Businesses have now opened up and this country has been accepted into the Asian business community.  Recently the U.S. sent diplomats to discuss leniency on years of …

Can’t Alleviate Poverty Without….

December 29, 2011 by B Sue Leave a Comment
poverty

About 1.7 billion people are estimated to live in absolute poverty today and almost half the world — over three billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.  With few resources to meet their basic needs, youth who are in poverty are trying to make ends meet in order to survive.  This is a deadly disease and is a widespread pandemic.  And believe it or not, income differentials are widening, which means the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. Poverty is persistent, deadly and breeds hopelessness.  But the local church is even more persistent breaking down the walls of impoverished people.  In Southeast Asia, global youth workers are creating an entrepreneurship school.  In Zambia, youth now have access to sustainable jobs and better farming techniques through youth worker training.  In Malawi, youth are given HIV education in secondary schools, and the youth workers are empowering the youth …

Burma Education Crisis Response

May 4, 2011 by Ryan Leave a Comment
burma

I found Irrawady’s article on Burma’s Education Crisis very accurate to what I’ve seen In Myanmar on my travels there the past few years.  I’ve spent 8 months in Myanmar over the last year and a half working on projects focused on youth ministry leadership and researching the viability of the entrepreneurship school we plan to launch in the spring of 2012.  We have taken great length to understand the situation of education in Myanmar.  Below are some excerpts from the article that stood out to me. “We used to have the best education in Asia,” a high school teacher told The Irrawaddy. “If we continue at this rate, our public education will forever be ruined, and I can’t see how the next generation will manage the country.” “Everyone just buys books in the market, which you can copy the assignments from. During the lessons we just sit there and listen to the teachers. There is no discussion.” “The …

$10 a month

AIDS

I just read this article called “African Girls Getting World Bank Cash Deters Sugar Daddies.” In case the term sugar daddy is only vaguely familiar:  it officially describes a rich, older man who gives gifts or money to a young woman in exchange for sexual favors or companionship.  In the realm of HIV/AIDS, it gives a partial explanation as to why young women aged 15 to 24 (in sub-saharan Africa) have infection rates that are three times higher than young men in the same age group. The article presents the results from a couple of randomized studies that gave cash incentives to female youth and measured the impact on their sexual behaviors and rates of infection.  In Malawi, about 3,800 young women aged 13 to 22 were enrolled.  Here is what they found: One group got an average of $10 a month and payment for school fees if they regularly attended class. The others got nothing. A year and a half after the program began, …

World Youth Day

February 27, 2011 by Aaron Leave a Comment
World Youth Day 2011

I have been following this event called World Youth Day for several years now. The Catholic church has been organizing this for more than 25 years.  The purpose of the World Youth Day is three-fold: putting trust in the young, gathering together and meeting the international world on a human level. "World Youth Day is not simply a gathering for the young people of the world, but a time to put trust in the world's youth." Below is a video that highlights last year's World Youth Day: In 2008, World Youth Day was held in Sydney and more than 400,000 people attended.  Last year, more than 70,000 youth gathered for the Pope's message in St. Peter's Square.  Now this sounds really good to me at first, but I want to take this opportunity to analyze this event, and I want to begin by asking some questions. First of all, what was accomplished?  In youth ministry, we have criticized the use of numbers and being too …
