“My first born daughter of Uganda”

May 9, 2012 by B Sue Leave a Comment
Deborah Nakibuuka, NOW 2011 & THEN 2004

Deborah's life is a testimony to God's good work and a glimpse at the way He transforms lives. Deborah was young when Lena Pira sponsored her through African Renewal Ministries (ARM).  Lina has a heart to train up a new generation of Christian leaders and she saw great potential in young Deborah.  The two started to exchange letters back and forth.  In 2006 Lina went to Uganda to work with ARM ministries and had the privilege of finally meeting Deborah face to face.  "She was very shy, reserved, and not quite sure of herself or how to interact with me," recalls Lina. In 2007 Lina returned to Uganda to work near Deborah's school.  They enjoyed each others company and  began to form a unique bond.  Deborah would visit her during the day and volunteer her time to work alongside Lina in her free time.  Lina saw the potential in Deborah as God's daughter. "Over the years I have seen her transform from a shy 8 year old to a …

Overwhelmed with Excitement! These are the final few days before the first classes at Opportunities NOW.  It’s been a busy week doing a teacher orientation, tweaking the curriculum, and having lots of final meetings.  It’s amazing how everything has come together.  The last two years of ideas, meetings, and research are all coming together on Monday when students enter our facility to start their journey toward starting their own business. …

Childhood Marriage – a reality for millions

April 25, 2012 by Angie Leave a Comment

I have a twelve-year-old daughter.  She loves to dance and sing and act.  She is a free spirited girl.  I still call her my baby. Today I read a statistic that makes my heart hurt.  According to the United Nations website, in rural Yemen the average age of marriage for girls was 12-13 years old. Twelve…married? That is a startling reality. But child marriage, defined as marriage before the age of 18, is not that uncommon in the rural developing world even outside of Africa.  In fact, South Asia has the highest percentage of child marriages.   In India and Bangladesh the percentage of girls wed before reaching what we would consider “adulthood” is 50%. According to Unicef, “Marrying girls under 18 years old is rooted in gender discrimination, encouraging premature and continuous child bearing and giving preference to boys’ education. Child marriage is also a strategy for economic survival as families marry …

Impacting Business Leaders is as easy as 1,2,3!

Youth in Southeast Asia (2)

We have an exciting announcement to make at YouthHOPE for the youth of Myanmar! God has opened doors for three international business as mission trainers from Chiang Mai, Thailand to train our summer internship participants and the Myanmar business community on business as mission skills.  Originally our summer interns were going to travel to a conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand before coming to Myanmar.  However, due to lack of interest from college students there, the company was forced to cancel the training. Our interns still needed training before this summer so he asked the trainers if they’d come to Myanmar instead. Their calendars were free and they accepted! It gets better!  In wanting to make their time in Myanmar worthwhile, Ryan talked with a couple of organizations in his network and the response was overwhelming.  He approached the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce about doing a two hour session with some of their …

Global Youth Survey on Sex Education

March 23, 2012 by Adam Leave a Comment
Chalkboard - Sex

A multi-national survey of youth was released on World Contraception Day.  The published findings are quite alarming. The survey shows an increase in number of sexual partners and a decrease in knowledge about sex (36 percent of Egyptian youth surveyed believe showering after sex is an effective form of contraception.) The researchers highlight that only 55 percent of youth in Europe receive sexual education in school and only 75 percent in most of Asia and the USA. They cite the lack of sexual education that youth receive in schools as the problem. I find this quite interesting. If half of the youth in Europe and three-fourths in most of the rest of the world are receiving their version of sexual education and the numbers continue to rise, a broke system. Providing more access to condoms and more sex ed in schools is not going to fix the problem, and their research seems to prove that. Change will happen among the youth of the …

Youth Unemployment and a Challenge to the Church

March 21, 2012 by Katie Leave a Comment
youth-unemployment

Dozens of articles and reports by the UN, CNN, BBC, Unicef and others in the past few years have focused on the global youth unemployment crisis.  As the global economy continues to waiver and bend, millions around the world fight the effects of unemployment. According to a report by the International Labor Office, there were approximately 81 million unemployed youth between the ages of 15-24 at the end of 2009--the highest ever. Many governments and organizations are establishing programs and schemes to fight this trend, to give hope to a generation trying to find their place.  In the UK, the prime minister is planning an incentive that would give employers subsidies to employ 18-24 year olds for six-month periods.  Throughout the world, programs are starting up to train youth for small business ventures and entrepreneurship opportunities. The world seems to be taking notice of this global youth crisis, slowly, but …

Rap, tats and slang

I came across an Associated Press article written a few months ago, entitled "US military legacy rubs off on Iraqi youth." The article highlights how 8,000,000 "Iraqis - a quarter of the population - have been born since the US led invasion of 2003 and nearly half the country is under the age of 19."  In 2010, the population of Iraq was 32 million people.  That means that there are 16 million under the age of 19.  It would stand to reason that half of these are likely teenagers. Roughly 8 million youth in a country that is predominantly Muslim.  96.85% according to the most recent Operation World text. While the US military spent the past 8 years fighting for apparent freedom, the negative influence on youth was "hip-hop styles, tough-guy mannerisms, and slangy English patter."  That means that they have heard of Eminem and 50 Cent, seen the Twilight movies, but have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This reminds me of …

Developing in a Developing Country

working youth

God’s timing is amazing.  Myanmar in the last year has gone from oppressive Military Dictatorship to newly formed Democracy.   A couple of years ago YouthHOPE decided to put a lot of emphasis on Myanmar as there were some very exciting youth ministry opportunities. As we were training youth pastors and creating resources for them, we came to understand some of the major needs that youth have in Myanmar.   We did a survey a little over two years ago at a youth meeting and we heard their overwhelming cry for help.  On the survey these young people told us that the greatest need in Myanmar was professional education and job creation.  We did further research and decided that we couldn’t do youth work in Myanmar without trying to address these issues.  Since we made that decision a few years ago we now have the foundation within the country that is necessary to make a positive impact in this area. God’s timing is …

Burma Education Crisis Response

May 4, 2011 by Ryan Leave a Comment
burma

I found Irrawady’s article on Burma’s Education Crisis very accurate to what I’ve seen In Myanmar on my travels there the past few years.  I’ve spent 8 months in Myanmar over the last year and a half working on projects focused on youth ministry leadership and researching the viability of the entrepreneurship school we plan to launch in the spring of 2012.  We have taken great length to understand the situation of education in Myanmar.  Below are some excerpts from the article that stood out to me. “We used to have the best education in Asia,” a high school teacher told The Irrawaddy. “If we continue at this rate, our public education will forever be ruined, and I can’t see how the next generation will manage the country.” “Everyone just buys books in the market, which you can copy the assignments from. During the lessons we just sit there and listen to the teachers. There is no discussion.” “The …

$10 a month

AIDS

I just read this article called “African Girls Getting World Bank Cash Deters Sugar Daddies.” In case the term sugar daddy is only vaguely familiar:  it officially describes a rich, older man who gives gifts or money to a young woman in exchange for sexual favors or companionship.  In the realm of HIV/AIDS, it gives a partial explanation as to why young women aged 15 to 24 (in sub-saharan Africa) have infection rates that are three times higher than young men in the same age group. The article presents the results from a couple of randomized studies that gave cash incentives to female youth and measured the impact on their sexual behaviors and rates of infection.  In Malawi, about 3,800 young women aged 13 to 22 were enrolled.  Here is what they found: One group got an average of $10 a month and payment for school fees if they regularly attended class. The others got nothing. A year and a half after the program began, …

Potential to Bless or Burden a Nation

With my wife literally half way around the world, I often times find myself thinking about where she is and what she is up to... In an attempt to become a little better informed about her current whereabouts, I stumbled upon this article about youth employment in Cambodia. It’s a great article and, in case business or statistics bore you,  I’ve highlighted a few points I considered worthwhile: …

Grads more likely to become Phi Alpha Beta than a Campus Crusader

February 9, 2011 by Adam Leave a Comment
Screen shot 2011-02-01 at 4.00.02 PM

I recently had the opportunity to hear Kara Powell, Director of the Fuller Youth Institute (FYI), speak on her latest research and upcoming book Sticky Faith. Often within youth ministry the college drop-out stat gets thrown around, and depending on who you ask, it says somewhere between 40 to 60 percent of youth group graduates drift away from the Church when they transition to college. Unfortunately, the numbers seem to hold up outside of the states as well. Kara’s research and book are focused on helping the church improve, she jokes that no one would be alright with a drivers-ed program that only prepared half of its students. Her suggestion, I thought, was worth repeating. Present a better gospel: the typical do’s and don’ts list that has become the gospel to far too many (ex. Do read your bible/Don’t drink alcohol), simply doesn’t transition to a faith that lasts past high school/secondary school.  She asked nearly …
