10 Marks of a Successful Youth Ministry

April 27, 2012 by Justin Leave a Comment

I recently spent the weekend at Impact Student Ministries of First Baptist Church of Vandalia, OH.  I had the honor of being their guest speaker for a DiscipleNOW weekend they call “Morphis.”  Dale and Christa Puckett have led the youth there for 3 years and what I saw in my time with them was nothing short of fascinating. Psalm 115:1  “Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to Your Name be the glory, for Your mercy (love) and Your truth (faithfulness).”  Success in youth ministry is not quantified by numbers, but rather by fruit.  A youth ministry will not bear fruit unless it is Jesus centered.  This is not an exhaustive list.  However, here are 10 marks of a successful youth ministry, as evidenced by what I saw at FBCV: A team mindset – the small group leaders at Impact serve joyfully.  They know they are part of the team.  Dale & Christa do not micromanage them, they trust that they will minister well to …

The conference by youth workers for youth workers

simply-youth-ministry-conference

I spent March 2 - 5, 2012 at the Simply Youth Ministry Conference in Louisville, KY.  This was my first time attending SYMC, and I wasn't sure what to expect.  The brochure offered "Time to BREATHE.  REFUEL YOUR MIND.  REFRESH YOUR HEART.  REJUVENATE YOUR SOUL."  What I experienced was nothing short of what was advertised. My purpose for attending the conference was to see how YouthHOPE can be involved - to learn and see what other organizations are doing in the area of global youth.  I was extremely blessed by the presence of an organization called HeartWork.  Their exhibit looped a video that I could not stop watching - see for yourself here - it's a beautiful example of God's heart for the nations and how He can use youth to make a difference in the world. Two things really impressed me about SYMC: 1)  It was Jesus-centered.  So much of what was brought forth from the platform in the general sessions pointed …

Isaiah 61

December 16, 2011 by B Sue Leave a Comment
i61.notext.2011

This year the focus of Isaiah 61 (i61) was to make known the injustices of slavery among youth.   Many young people of the world don’t have a family network to keep them safe and face circumstances of deep poverty.  This leaves youth with limited opportunities, which in turn leads them into risky situations that can put them in harm’s way.   An estimated 27 million people are caught in a form of slavery today. This is what Tati Leal-Oliveria, a i61 youth participant, had to say about her experience.  “I couldn't even imagine that in the history of slavery, right now is the time that there is the most. The I61 conference allowed me to become more aware of what is actually happening outside of the US and right under our own noses… The conference was one the coolest experiences I've been through and I can't wait for next year's.” Isaiah 61:1 declares that “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has …

Why I’m Excited About this Week

National Missionary Convention (17-20) – I first attended this conference as a Bible College student in 2006 with the sole purpose of finding a youth ministry internship outside of the States. I failed. That experience though created a greater passion within me for pursuing global youth ministry and eventually played a part in YouthHOPE’s creation of our internship program. I’m looking forward to sharing about our 5 global youth ministry internships, connecting with past interns, and recruiting more full-time global youth workers. National Youth Worker Convention (18-20) – This has been going down every year since 1970, so everyone in Youth Ministry already knows what it is all about, right? Everyone except me that is, I’ve never been. I’m excited YouthHOPE has a presence at the convention this year, and really excited for youth groups to start doing The Hunger Strike Challenge (here is one reason why). Extended …

Raising Money in a Developing Country

Many people would lead you to believe that it’s not possible to raise money for missions projects in poor developing countries.  The thought is that the money must all come from the affluent church from the West or the affluent countries in the East.  Those people are wrong.  They leave out the fact that there is a generous church in developing nations often eager to invest in projects helping their own people. Today, Sunday September 18 my wife and one of our conference committee members Zat Pung traveled to Adonai Church in Yangon to ask the members to give to the Myanmar MOVE National Youth Pastors Conference.  The Conference has a goal to be fully supported within the country of Myanmar after 4 years.  The conference committee is responsible for raising over 50% of the conference costs to train 300 youth leaders in 5 days.  In turn, these leaders will put on their own camps and conferences that will reach literally …
