The Book of the Skaters

May 14, 2012 by Kyle Leave a Comment
Habacuc's Bible

Habacuc went to the skate park Monday night like he normally does.  While he's there he looks for opportunities to connect with skaters in meaningful ways. He told me he's got three questions in mind when he approaches one of the youth: How are you doing? How is your family? and How is your skating going? He's found that by engaging the youth at a personal level, doors sometime open for more questions...like on Monday night. Habacuc wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, taking photos and seeking out some skaters to encourage and chat with. It was when his camera bag was left open by his side that he saw a kid take a peep at what was inside.  Haby had chatted with the guy before.  His team had been praying for him.  They knew that he was doing some bad things, mostly drug related.  The skater reached down and pulled the book out.  "What's this?" he asked.  "Is this the Book of the Skaters?" Habacuc's bible was …

It’s simple really… When the saints pray… stuff happens!

intern

Here at YouthHOPE, one way in which we transform the lives of global youth is through internships. Every summer we send teams out to work with our Global Youth Workers and be a blessing to the ministries. This is a way for us to give encouragement to our youth workers and for their ministry to get a boost of energy. In about 5 weeks YouthHOPE will be sending out 15 college students and team leaders “to go into all the world” and work alongside our missionaries in 5 different countries. On May 28th, all of our interns will come together for training and preparation in Fort Myers, Florida and then on June 3rd, they will go out…to Bulgaria, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, and Southeast Asia to learn, serve and grow. This summer our interns will get a chance to learn and gain hands-on cross-cultural youth ministry experience while working with experienced Global Youth Workers and their ministries. Interns will develop and teach in an …

I misunderstood missions.

April 9, 2012 by B Sue Leave a Comment

Much of my life I heard of people going on mission "trips".... They would often come back with a new understanding of  God and His character.  In my heart I desired stories like that, to be a part of something bigger than myself.  My freshman year of college I had the chance to take a mission trip to help build houses.  I had a mindset that  "I am going to bring these people something that they need and it is my responsibility to do it."  Our team came in, worked hard, built relationships, built houses, and then left.  I remember saying goodbye at the end of 7 days with a deep sense of heartache thinking, what's next?  Looking back I see how this mission trip was more about me than it was about those I went to serve.  Honestly, it was like I had my own agenda, wanting to fill this need deep inside of me to help others. I had an opportunity to travel to Cambodia last summer with YouthHOPE, and unintentionally, I took …

A Snapshot of YouthHOPE

April 4, 2012 by Kyle Leave a Comment
youth

We felt it was time to let you know: YouthHOPE is growing.  God is doing some amazing things in our team and through our partnerships around the world.  It seems as though when one initiative takes off another one begins.  Folks are constantly getting in touch with us to explore how we can partner together to mutually live out the callings God has placed on our hearts.  Here's a quick snapshot of the growth we've been experiencing: - Mobilized YH Development Team members into ministry overseas: Adam & Kristy Griffith are about the Lord's business in Chiang Mai, Thailand while Ryan Russell has re-joined his wife Mary in Myanmar where they lead the Opportunities Now Entrepreneurship School. - Development Team Growth: Miguel Faundez has arrived from Santiago, Chile to spearhead YouthHOPE's global youth ministry training initiatives.  The engaged Josh Kaminsky and Sarah Waddell are busy developing their prayer and provision in …

Don’t Walk Away

Dont walk away

A recent post by our global youth ministry partners Urban Action: Youth are mean, rude, and they cuss all the time.  Half of them are on drugs.  They don’t respect their elders or anybody else for that matter.  They think they know everything and won’t listen to advice no matter how wise it is.  They waste all their time doing stupid things like playing video games, listening to terrible music, skateboarding, and chasing  someone of the opposite sex who is even stupider than them.  It’s no wonder no adult wants to spend time with them!  Right? Or maybe it’s us adults.  Maybe we’re just tired.  Work, kids, spouse, friends, email, church, small groups, studies, exercise, hobbies, and Facebook.  Who has time to invest in youth?  Maybe we start to think so negatively about youth as a way to feel better about not spending time with them.   I know.  I know.  It can be tough to work with youth.  I’ve chosen to …

Urban Action- Shaking too much dust?

January 25, 2012 by B Sue Leave a Comment

At YouthHOPE one of our 4 core values focuses on relationships.  We work in community and through communities to build partnerships of shared learning, trust and responsibility.  Our partners at Urban Action have a unique opportunity to share Christ by building relationships through skate ministry in Chile.  Here is a recent blog post about what God has been teaching them through their relationships with the skate boarding community: Click here to read more blogs by Urban Action. "If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town." - Matthew 10:14 Have you ever heard someone quote this passage in a conversation about sharing faith in Jesus? So, if I give somebody a tract, or tell them the 4 Spiritual laws, or explain the Roman Roads, or just tell them I go to church and they don’t immediately decide to follow Christ - I’m done, right? I’m pretty sure …

God can use a piece of wood to save people

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to attend the 2011 Skate and Action Sports Conference at Calvary Chapel, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  The conference, founded by Toni & Uli Frallicciardi (Ramp48 skatepark), brought together over 100 leaders from skate ministries across the country.  The speakers for the conference were Pastor Alistair Begg, sk8 evangelist Brian Sumner, freestyle pro skater and preacher Tim Byrne, pro surfer Bryan Jennings, Calvary Chapel pastors:  Raul Ries, Chet Lowe and more!  The worship was led by the incredible Oceans Edge Band. Three months prior to going, I didn't even know about the conference.  I was overjoyed, however, when Habacuc & Liz Diaz-Ramos (global youth workers, founders of UrbanAction) asked me to attend and set up a booth on their behalf.  As I was planning for the conference, I wondered who would be a good person to have work the booth with me?  The first person that God brought …

Miguel Faúndez – Chile

October 12, 2009 by Kristy Leave a Comment
Miguel Faundez in Chile

Miguel Angel Faúndez is the director of training for Youth Specialties Chile. He was born in the south of Chile, the son of a pastor, and has been involved in youth ministry since he was a student himself. More than 10 years ago Miguel saw the need to provide opportunities for youth that were different than the traditional and restrictive style of his church. So along with a group of friends they started a summer camp program that has reached out to hundreds of students over the years. Miguel has also been involved in missions. He attended Youth With a Mission's Discipleship Training School and traveled extensively with the Chilean director throughout Asia and Oceania on mission projects. He then took the opportunity to spend two years studying youth ministry at Christ for the Nationas in Dallas, TX, where he received a diploma in youth ministry. He is currently finishing up his bachelor's degree in business administration at Dallas …
