The Book of the Skaters

May 14, 2012 by Kyle Leave a Comment
Habacuc's Bible

Habacuc went to the skate park Monday night like he normally does.  While he's there he looks for opportunities to connect with skaters in meaningful ways. He told me he's got three questions in mind when he approaches one of the youth: How are you doing? How is your family? and How is your skating going? He's found that by engaging the youth at a personal level, doors sometime open for more questions...like on Monday night. Habacuc wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, taking photos and seeking out some skaters to encourage and chat with. It was when his camera bag was left open by his side that he saw a kid take a peep at what was inside.  Haby had chatted with the guy before.  His team had been praying for him.  They knew that he was doing some bad things, mostly drug related.  The skater reached down and pulled the book out.  "What's this?" he asked.  "Is this the Book of the Skaters?" Habacuc's bible was …

What is God calling me to?

April 23, 2012 by Kyle 1 Comment
Path of Life Sculpture Garden

This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls..." Jeremiah 6:16a (NIV) Many people who partner with us say they've found us on the web.  Often times they're searching, looking for answers.  We created an opportunities database to help people hone in on potential ministry opportunities.  This is for people who have a desire to serve in a specific place or in a certain way.  Sometimes, however, I think people come to us with a wide open perspective.  They're not sure what to do, or more importantly, what they're being called to. I know that most believers, especially young people who've not yet chosen a career path, wrestle with God's call on their lives.  And rightly so!  I think we sometimes think God has this wild and amazing dream for us that we're certain we don't want to miss out on.  People ask …

A Snapshot of YouthHOPE

April 4, 2012 by Kyle Leave a Comment
youth

We felt it was time to let you know: YouthHOPE is growing.  God is doing some amazing things in our team and through our partnerships around the world.  It seems as though when one initiative takes off another one begins.  Folks are constantly getting in touch with us to explore how we can partner together to mutually live out the callings God has placed on our hearts.  Here's a quick snapshot of the growth we've been experiencing: - Mobilized YH Development Team members into ministry overseas: Adam & Kristy Griffith are about the Lord's business in Chiang Mai, Thailand while Ryan Russell has re-joined his wife Mary in Myanmar where they lead the Opportunities Now Entrepreneurship School. - Development Team Growth: Miguel Faundez has arrived from Santiago, Chile to spearhead YouthHOPE's global youth ministry training initiatives.  The engaged Josh Kaminsky and Sarah Waddell are busy developing their prayer and provision in …

Contextualizing NASCAR

March 9, 2012 by Kyle 2 Comments
driving-fast

I was listening to National Public Radio the other day and I heard that a psychologist at West Virginia University has connected some 650 automobile accidents to people watching NASCAR.  He was saying that folks were actually acting out NASCAR-style driving when behind the wheel of their family vehicle.   You can listen to it here (4min 28sec). Last night I taught a course at a local church on contextualization (the process of making sense of information from the situation or location in which it is found).  We covered a wide variety of topics including culture, worldviews, epistemology, and ethnocentrism.  Once we were able to navigate our way through some of the heavier pieces we turned our sights towards practical application.  I could tell that the people in the class were trying desperately to wrap their minds around how the issue actually applied to missions work. Most, if not everyone, involved in global ministry …

Partnering with Nationals

February 17, 2012 by Kyle Leave a Comment
partnering with nationals

Many folks are aware of YouthHOPE's engagement with North Americans.  Perhaps you already know that we mobilize college students each summer to serve alongside global youth workers.  Maybe you've run into us at a conference and heard about our global youth ministry courses offered at a number of U.S. colleges and universities.  I'd be really disappointed if you didn't know that we engage, prepare, and support people to proclaim Christ overseas as career missionaries reaching out to youth.  I would wager, however, that you are not as informed about our partnerships with foreign nationals who are working with youth.  By 'nationals' I mean Christian workers, who are not Americans, ministering in their own country. YouthHOPE is proud to partner with folks who are engaging in holistic youth ministry all around the world.  In addition to the five national couples associated with YouthHOPE, we also partner with several …

How much is that kid worth?

August 17, 2011 by Kyle Leave a Comment
Real Madrid Prodigy

A couple weeks ago ESPN ran a story about a 7-year-old Argentine kid signing with football giants Real Madrid. Apparently young Leonel Angel Coira (pictured left) displayed proficient enough skills to warrant serious interest from Los Blancos as well as cross-town rivals Atletico. Many Westerners may find themselves tempted to make knee-jerk judgments about the matter, so I'm quite interested in beginning a conversation revolving around one of the main themes emanating for this story: the value of young people. This move highlights the lengths to which people will go to secure the services of quality individuals who will add value to their team, in this case, a professional football team. Now, there is a certain degree of assumption one must permit when speculating on the value of athletes of any age. For example, one could easily suggest Leonel might lose his right leg next summer in a freak skiing accident and we'll never see him …

Are Youth Changing the World?

February 11, 2011 by Kyle Leave a Comment
egyptprotest

Most of us watch the news of what’s happened in North Africa over the last few weeks and never take the time to ask how all this got started.  Sure we know people are upset and supposedly there are some evil dictators involved, but what about the fire-starters: who, or what, kicked off these revolutions? Many attribute the Egyptian protests to people uniting through social networking to rally together 91% of the country’s 9.4% unemployed: the under-30s.  Some might suggest it was the 26 year-old vegetable vendor who set himself ablaze, literally and figuratively igniting the Tunisian protests.  His beef was with the government: he was denied the right to sell vegetables in a country where the youth unemployment rate is estimated at 30 percent.  Having spent time ministering in England, I was reminded of last November when youth in the UK were busy protesting high costs of education.  Realizing their college degrees would …

I hate(d) Youth Ministry

February 5, 2011 by Kyle 5 Comments
kylemindy

I grew up in a small church.  It was a place where young people were shifted to some far corridor to participate in “Wee Worship” or “Junior Church” while the adults sat through “Big Church.”  I never missed Sunday School and had more than one decidedly un-cool youth minister.  I can attribute much of my early spiritual formation to one of those “t-shirt-tucked-into-jeans-with-no-belt” mentors.  His investment in me led to my pursuit of ministry as a vocation. Well, him and some Thursday night message at a summer youth conference. After enrolling myself in college to prepare for ministry, I was blessed to get the opportunity to study the Word in an in-depth kind of way. I was surprised to find no mention of “youth ministers” anywhere in the Scriptures. In fact, I soon discovered that there seemed to be only one group set apart to minister to young people: their parents. Think Deuteronomy 6: Hear, O Israel: The …
