The secularization of America continues…

I love meeting new people and spending time with the elderly.  They are never short on stories of "the way things once were."  My former pastor, Gary Buchman, used to tell me stories about reciting the 23rd Psalm in public school every morning.  Prayer in schools in America was common for decades and wasn't just something that the religious right endorsed. It's been 12 years since I surrendered my life to Jesus as a teenager.  I was 17 when God gave me "eyes to see and ears to hear."  Over time I began to develop a Christian worldview and have seen the secularization of America increase ever since.  From businesses requiring their employees to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas," to the countless debates and attempts by the ACLU to remove the 10 commandments from courthouses, surely "because lawlessness abounds, the love of many [has] grown cold."  (Matthew 24:12) Recently I came across this article on msnbc …

Provision for Global Youth Workers

January 27, 2012 by Kristy Leave a Comment
rice

God’s promise of providing exactly what we need is seen all throughout His word. Sometimes I forget how miraculous God’s provision really is. He has been faithful from the gift of mah-na in the desert (Exodus 16:9-16) to our greatest need Jesus, the Bread of Life (John 16:25). Time and time again he shows how he will provide for the needs of those who trust in the Word. Recently, I have been reminded of this truth through God’s miraculous provision for YouthHOPE's global youth workers, Ryan and Mary, in the country of Myanmar. Their Entrepreneurship School is in the midst of developing a school curriculum and they are finally seeing fruit from the research and planning. Your prayers have been greatly appreciated and God has been faithful in providing for a need of computers through a friend of Mary’s. In fact, the computer company was so generous and offered to put in the internet and provide a one year warranty as well as …

Urban Action- Shaking too much dust?

January 25, 2012 by B Sue Leave a Comment
skating

At YouthHOPE one of our 4 core values focuses on relationships.  We work in community and through communities to build partnerships of shared learning, trust and responsibility.  Our partners at Urban Action have a unique opportunity to share Christ by building relationships through skate ministry in Chile.  Here is a recent blog post about what God has been teaching them through their relationships with the skate boarding community: Click here to read more blogs by Urban Action. "If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town." - Matthew 10:14 Have you ever heard someone quote this passage in a conversation about sharing faith in Jesus? So, if I give somebody a tract, or tell them the 4 Spiritual laws, or explain the Roman Roads, or just tell them I go to church and they don’t immediately decide to follow Christ - I’m done, right? I’m pretty sure …

Service without Sacrifice

January 23, 2012 by Adam 2 Comments
make me a servant

Do we make it to easy for youth to serve? A few weeks ago I was in a gymnasium at a Bible College recruiting for YouthHOPE's summer internships and began pondering this question. There were nearly 25 organizations or churches gathered with the hopes of enticing a student, into working with them. The burden in this scenario falls on the churches and organizations.  They work to present their opportunity to students in a favorable light (the best attempt, a church looking for a youth ministry intern brought a George Foreman grill and cooked bacon to hand out). I realize part of this is a result of the reality that Jesus predicted with the hands and harvest analogy; there always seems to be more work than workers, but part of it seems wrong. I think it is an extension of a flaw in how we teach students to serve in youth group; an extension that has the potential to follow students through Bible College and into the rest of their lives …

Transformational youth ministry-Malawi & Zambia Internship 2012

January 20, 2012 by Katie Leave a Comment
Youth training for Foundations for Farming in the village of Eg'chickeni.

At YouthHOPE, we have the privilege of working with awesome global youth workers throughout the world who have a heart to see the lives of youth transformed by God.  These people are in the trenches, working daily to bring the truth of Christ to the youth they interact with.  Some of the global youth workers that I am blessed to work with are the same wonderful people who were hosts to my intern team this past summer, Rutherford and Tsahai Banda in Malawi and Lloyd Ng’ambi in Zambia.  I was privileged with the opportunity to spend the summer working alongside these amazing servants in their ministries and I am excited about the opportunities in front of our intern team for 2012! Currently, it is estimated that 21% of the population in Zambia is made up of youth between the ages of 15-24.  These youth are facing many difficulties, including unemployment, lack of education, and HIV/AIDS.  Lloyd, Director of Youth, Synod of …

YouthHOPE’s 12 New Year’s resolutions for 2012

January 18, 2012 by Aaron 1 Comment
2012-new-year-wishes-on-sea

We are extremely excited about what this year holds for our lives and ministry. God continues to bless us, challenge us and provide the resources that we need in order to carry out the vision that was placed on a heart. The following are some of our 2012 goals that we have decided upon through prayer and planning:   1. MOBILIZE our first 2 full time YouthHOPE teams to Chang Mai, Thailand and Yangon, Myanmar.2. CREATE awareness and raise funds in support of the Hillmans, our global youth workers in Bulgaria by facilitating 11 people, including several Fort Myers-based youth pastors and YouthHOPE staff, to participate in a 300 miles/5 day bike ride called “To the Ends of the Earth”.3. PARTNER with the Hunger Strike Challenge and Food for the Hungry to facilitate the sponsoring of 100 Cambodian youth, by promoting the event to youth pastors and youth ministries.4. RESEARCH, write and publish about how to better inform and …

Eternal Youth

January 13, 2012 by Adam Leave a Comment
banking

Apparently the title of this blog is also a slogan used by a 100 year old bank in Thailand. They define the phrase a little more in their advertisements saying, "Eternal Youth: always being young, never growing old." They use this slogan when they introduce forward thinking changes to the banking system. One has to assume this is because they are aware that the majority of the population associates innovation and change with youth. Few traits span the wide gap between Eastern and Western culture. Creativity of youth is among that short list.  Therefore, it seems natural to both the Western and Eastern mind for a bank to introduce its ideas for innovation and improvement through the portion of the population between childhood and adulthood. Why then does it seem to be so unnatural for those within the church to attach value to the differences in thought patterns between its established leaders and its youth? Do you look at this …

Asia has some of the fastest growing economies with some of the largest populations of poverty in the world.  The country you will travel to has been under a Military dictatorship for the past 20 years.  This last year was the beginning of transition for the country.  The country was once known as one of the worst human rights violators in the world, but after a November 2010 democratic election there have been fast changes.  Businesses have now opened up and this country has been accepted into the Asian business community.  Recently the U.S. sent diplomats to discuss leniency on years of …

Same Same but Different

January 5, 2012 by Kristy 1 Comment
youth event

Same same but different- definition: being one or identical though having diverse names, aspects, locations, etc. This summer everywhere we went we heard this term "same same but different".  I can't think of a better way to describe the youth culture of the world; it is the same same but different everywhere. From the Beatles, to Elvis, to the current teen idol of choice Justin Bieber; youth have been awestruck by teen idols for decades.  Young American girls are not the only ones mesmerized by teen pop super stars.  In Europe, millions of youth tuned in last year to watch the marriage of Prince William to his new bride Kate.  A more recent royal wedding took place one month ago where multitudes of youth in South Asia crowded to the wedding of the King heart throb of Bhutan, turning the "simple and traditional wedding" into what looked like a grand celebration.  Just like Justin Bieber is popular to the girls of …
