We’re finally on the last leg of our journey to our home for the summer. We’ve spent 23 hours in 4 different airplanes, 8 hours in airports, 3 overnights – 1 in Bangkok and 2 in Phnom Penh, and now we’re in the middle of our 6 hour bus ride to our YWAM base. Needless to say, we’ve gotten to know each other quite well already! Lots of laughs, lots of yawns, & not much sleep. Here are the highlights of our journey across the globe:
- Being served breakfast, lunch and dinner on the plane to Tokyo
- A 2 a.m. tour of Bangkok with pit stops for some authentic street food and a drive through the flower market
- Sweating through multiple pairs of clothes
- Paying in U.S. Dollars and getting change in Khmer Riel
- Meeting and LOVING our host, Jenni
- Drive-bys of the King’s Palace
- No shoes, cushion seats, AMAZING dinner
- Lots of tuk-tuk rides all around the city
- Bartering in the market
- A trip to the TUOL SLENG Genocide Museum - This was tough on a lot of us. It’s hard to see pictures and experience the hurt that the Khmer people have been through. We wrestled with God about this and are learning everyday about grace and peace for all God’s children.
- Meeting Sambo, the Phnom Penh Wat elephant!
- A competition in a food court to try out new things and learning from Jenni that “you can pickle anything!”
- Joining in a huge aerobics class in the park
- Playing soccer with some local children and chatting with their parents
- An impromptu English practicing session with a national
- More rice, more rice, more rice!
We’re so thankful to Jenni for planning a day to immerse us into the culture and help us learn to build relationships with the beautiful Khmer people. We’re so excited to unpack our suitcases and start being students, servants, and storytellers!Team morale is great but there has been some conflict between us over the definition of the term “vegging.” Is food a criteria to be fully vegging? We’re very curious to hear what our friends from home and fellow interns around the globe think.
Join us next time for an update from our new home for the next 6 weeks!
Love and joy,
Cam Team
