Everyone remembers the first time they heard their mentor in the faith challenge them to put away their Bible for a month, yea? I mean, if I had a nickel for every time a youth minister dared his/her students to not read their Bible, right?
Check out this blog of a youth minister who did exactly that, challenged by Psalm 119:11 and the reality that the persecuted church around the world lives in, he challenged his students to NOT read their Bibles for the entire month of January (well, the first 24 days anyway).
Here is an excerpt from the blog:
“in the month of January, North Asheville Baptist Youth have laid their Bibles on the stage of the Attic in order to do three things:
1. See if there is scripture hidden in our hearts ready to surface at the moment of need.
2. Recognize that we are taking the availability of God’s Word for granted and pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters around the globe.
3. Create a hunger for God’s Word, many times we are not hungry for something until we are deprived of it.”
I love hearing stories of young people changing the world. I hope and pray the community in North Asheville is never the same, as this small group of youth put their faith into practice and get a taste of what they and God can accomplish when they are fully surrendered and trusting Him. Consider me part of the fruit from their labor of praying as a group for a solid month, I prayed more for the persecuted Church and have a slightly more intense hunger for God’s word because of it.
